Boum AG is a Swiss company and a spin-off of the University of Bern that develops urban gardening solutions. Founded in 2021, Boum aims to enable everyone to successfully grow plants through the innovative combination of technology and ecology.
The Bern-based eco-tech startup Boum was founded in 2021 as a spin-off of the University of Bern. The company combines technology and ecology to create innovative solutions that make growing plants in urban environments efficient and easy. Its interdisciplinary, science-driven approach enables Boum to develop unique, user-friendly products that maximise the joy of gardening on balconies and terraces.
Boum’s core product is an innovative plant care system designed for balconies and terraces. Thanks to a water tank and solar panel, the system operates autonomously and requires no external connections. Irrigation is managed via an app that informs users when the water tank needs to be refilled. Boum’s specially developed, self-regulating planters are supplied with water for weeks through discreet tubing. A carefully selected, sustainable soil and low-maintenance plants ensure robust growth with minimal effort. Boum helps every home to flourish, regardless of how much time or gardening experience someone has.
The Boum system is developed and assembled in Switzerland. The materials used for the water tank and planters are made from 80% recycled content and designed for long durability. Boum’s potting soil is produced entirely in Switzerland from Swiss raw materials, is peat-free and contains biochar for CO₂ storage. Vegetable and herb seedlings come from sustainable production, and the wildflower mixes offered are local Swiss blends. In this way, Boum contributes to climate protection and biodiversity in urban environments.
