ProSpecieRara is a non-profit foundation dedicated to safeguarding endangered plants and animals from extinction. It works to conserve and promote the use of more 5'700 cultivated plants varieties and 38 traditional livestock breeds.
The diverse characteristics of the old varieties and breeds that ProSpecieRara works to conserve and promote are equivalent to a broad genetic pool that can be drawn upon when needed. This is all the more important because a large share of today’s global food supply is based on an alarmingly small number of species, varieties, and breeds. Specific traits may once again become important due to the sudden emergence of diseases, climate change, or new consumer demands. Preserving the widest possible diversity therefore acts as an insurance policy for the future.
