Save rare fruit varieties
Of the more than 2,500 fruit varieties conserved by ProSpecieRara, 40% are listed on the so-called Red List. This means that these varieties are safeguarded at fewer than three locations. Planting additional trees is therefore urgently needed.
Of the more than 2,500 fruit varieties conserved by ProSpecieRara, 40% are listed on the so-called Red List. This means that these varieties are safeguarded at fewer than three locations. Planting additional trees is therefore urgently needed. Each autumn, ProSpecieRara publishes a selection from the Red List with the aim of better securing at least 40 varieties per year.
Anyone who has space for a fruit tree and is interested in engaging with old, sometimes little-known fruit varieties is invited to plant a tree from the Red List. Home gardens are also suitable, as smaller tree forms (such as dwarf trees or espalier trees) can be planted. Multi-variety trees, on which two or three different varieties grow on a single tree, are also an attractive option for limited space. Those who already have a fruit tree in their garden can additionally graft a very rare variety onto it.
