Kokedama Terrarium

The easiest way to keep your Kokedama lush and green indoors. Terrariums are self-sustaining biotopes and therefore require minimal care. A little attention every few weeks is enough to maintain a beautiful Kokedama terrarium.

Location: Light is essential for the healthy growth of your Kokedama terrarium. Choose a location with plenty of daylight but no direct sunlight. The optimal temperature is between 15 and 25°C, so avoid heat sources. North-facing windows often provide insufficient light.

Watering: every 4 to 5 weeks If the moss appears dry, you can spray it with water. The moss ball should remain moist to provide sufficient moisture for the plant. If the moss appears very dry, you can briefly hold it under running water to help it absorb water better.

Plant care: If the plant develops brown leaves or grows too large for the glass, you can trim the unwanted leaves. Small sprouts or mushrooms growing from the moss contribute to natural growth and can be left or removed if unwanted.

Condensation: Light condensation is normal, but excessive condensation may require you to open the lid and ventilate the terrarium for a few hours. After watering, you can put the Kokedama back into the glass, but keep the lid open for a few hours initially. Then close the lid and observe, as there may be increased condensation shortly after watering.

Patience is key: It may take several weeks for the terrarium to acclimate to its new location. In some cases, small white fungal spots may appear on the moss or plant. This is normal and not a problem. Remove the Kokedama, rinse the fungal spots, and remove damaged leaves. Over time, you will see your terrarium recover.

Brown moss? No problem. Even if the moss has turned brown and lost its green tint, as is often the case with indoor Kokedama, you can revive it. Moss can recover well in a terrarium. It requires some patience, but after 2 to 3 weeks, you will see the brown moss turn green again. Another method is to place the Kokedama outdoors where moss already grows nearby. Then you can be sure that the conditions are favorable for the moss. Then it's just a matter of waiting. After 4 or 5 weeks, you will see small green spots everywhere as the moss comes back to life.

In our workshops, you have the opportunity to create terrarium Kokedama like these examples yourself.
