Ollas: a thousand-year-old irrigation system

The ollas are clay vessels used for capillary irrigation of plants. This irrigation system has a history of thousands of years, dating back more than 4000 years. It has been used in many regions of the world, especially in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

The origin of ollas

The ollas are clay vessels used for capillary irrigation of plants. This irrigation system has a history of thousands of years, dating back more than 4000 years. It has been used in many regions of the world, especially in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Ollas work by allowing water to slowly seep into the ground through a hole located at the bottom of the container. This prevents water evaporation and maintains optimal moisture for plant roots.

The company Wepot

Wepot is a company that offers innovative watering solutions for gardeners and plant lovers. Wepot's ollas are easy to use and suitable for all types of plants. The company has also developed moisture monitoring tools to help users maintain an optimal environment for their plants. Wepot's goal is to help people enjoy nature easily in their homes.

The company focuses on a local, social and circular economy. The Swiss company was founded on the school benches of the Universities of Lausanne and 2019 and works with sheltered workshops for part of its production. It has been awarded the Swissmade and SolarImpulse labels and won the Swiss Ethics Award in 2022.

How to use the Ollas

The Ollas are very easy to use. Whether you have small houseplants or a large garden, there is certainly a model to suit your needs. All you have to do is plant the olla near your plants, fill it with water and let nature do its work. Through capillarity, the water distributes naturally and slowly according to the needs of the plants. The roots of these soak up the water they need and gradually surround themselves with the olla. This method of irrigation is considered one of the most effective in the world, allowing a saving of up to 70% of water, an autonomy of up to 10 days and an improvement in plant growth.

Promising scientific research

Since its inception, Wepot has aimed to enhance the technology of ollas through collaboration with biology experts. This constantly evolving research approach has allowed Wepot to demonstrate the effectiveness of its ollas: they withstand frost, increase the productivity of vegetable gardens by up to 2 times compared to conventional irrigation systems, and contribute to CO2 absorption. Wepot is proud to offer sustainable and effective irrigation solutions for gardeners and farmers.
